Tor onion services use the .onion TLD, which is not recognized by the root DNS servers. Tor is required to access .onion domains. The most common way to block Tor traffic would be to locate an updating list of Tor exit nodes and configure a firewall to block these nodes. A company policy to prevent Tor use may also go a long way to cease its use.

Hi, McAfee blocks download of the Tor browser. Since Tor is a privacy protecting software, it seems odd that this software is infected with PUP or virus. Anyone else having trouble? Tor is downloadable from www.torproject.com. Is this a false finding from McAfee's side?

The Great Firewall of China has been trying to do this for years with only occasional success (which doesn't last for long). You can block access to the Tor directory servers which makes it more difficult, the user then needs to enter a relay address manually (that you don't know about and you will never know them all as anyone can set up a private Tor bridge relay at will).
