L2TP merges the best features of two other tunneling protocols: PPTP from Microsoft and L2F from Cisco Systems. What Is L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol)? | CactusVPN Feb 25, 2016 Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol L2TP/IPSec VPN L2TP stands for Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol, and it doesn’t provide any encryption by itself. L2TP VPN usually uses an authentication protocol, IPSec (Internet Protocol Security), for strong encryption and authentication, which gives it an ultimate edge on some other most used protocols like PPTP.

L2TP traffic uses UDP protocol for both control and data packets. UDP port 1701 is used only for link establishment, further traffic is using any available UDP port (which may or may not be 1701). This means that L2TP can be used with most firewalls and routers (even with NAT) by enabling UDP traffic to be routed through the firewall or router.

It's a VPN thing The leading tunneling protocols are: SOCKSv5, Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), Layer 2 Transport Protocol ( L2TP ), and Internet Protocol Security Therefore, if the virtual private network (VPN) server is behind a NAT device, a Windows Vista-based VPN client computer or a Windows Server 2008-based VPN client computer cannot make a Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP)/IPsec connection to the VPN server.
